One piece of 316L bar becomes a 62 g case in six operations. Four of them are cutting. Two of them exist only to decide how the finished part will behave in light.

Six operations

Sawn

  1. 1

    Sawn

    A 45 mm bar of 316L is cut into blanks a little over the finished height. Nothing about it looks like a watch yet.

  2. 2

    Turned

    The blank is held in a collet and cut to diameter. The band, the bezel seat and the caseback thread are all cut in one setting so they share an axis.

  3. 3

    Milled

    Lugs, crown hole and the six caseback screw holes. This is where 62 g stops being a block and starts being a case.

  4. 4

    Blasted

    Fine glass bead at low pressure knocks the machining marks off and leaves a matte surface with no grain direction.

  5. 5

    Grained

    The band is drawn under an abrasive belt in one direction. Every scratch runs the same way, which is what makes the band throw a single hard line of light.

  6. 6

    Bevelled

    The edge between band and lug is cut back at 45° and polished by hand against a wheel. It takes about forty minutes and it is the only part of the case that acts like a mirror.
